PERM and University Recruitment: Print Ad Not Required

Print ad no longer required for university recruitment under special handling PERM certification for university or college teachers.

Up until now the Department of Labor (DOL) has refused to keep up with the real world by continuing to require that the centerpiece of university recruitment under the special handling PERM procedures for college or university teachers be a print journal ad. Not any more.

DOL has amended its FAQs as of September 1, 2011 and is now allowing an electronic or web-based national professional journal instead of a print journal when conducting recruitment under optional special recruitment and documentation procedures for college and university teachers. The advertisement for the job opportunity for which PERM certification is sought must be posted for at least 30 calendar days on the journal’s website. Documentation of the placement of an advertisement in an electronic or web-based national professional journal must include evidence of the start and end dates of the advertisement placement and the text of the advertisement.
